Hard water is characterized by the presence of calcium or magnesium ions in the form of carbonate. While these minerals are generally harmless, they can lead to mineral deposits when they react with water.

To descale and clean a kettle, follow these steps:

1. Fill the kettle halfway with one cup of vinegar or lemon juice and two cups of water.

2. Place the kettle on the stove and bring it to a boil. Leave the liquid to simmer for about 2 hours.

3. After 2 hours, remove the kettle from heat and let it cool down slightly. Use a soft cloth to wipe away any remaining residue.

4. Rinse the kettle thoroughly with clean water to remove any vinegar or mineral deposits. Dry the kettle with a clean, soft cloth.

5. If needed, repeat the descaling process until the kettle is clean and free of mineral buildup.

It's worth noting that if your area's water quality is particularly hard, you may notice spots or rust on the stainless steel bottom of the kettle after its first use. This is generally normal due to the minerals in hard water.
